Black Men United, “You Will Know”
Black men singing well about something uplifting? Man, it was great to grow up in the 90’s with ish like this.
Use whatever knowledge you have but see its limitations. Knowledge alone does not suffice; it has no heart. No amount of knowledge will nourish or sustain your spirit; it can never bring you ultimate happiness or peace. Life requires more than knowledge; it requires intense feeling and constant energy. Life demands right action of knowledge to come alive.
Harry Belafonte keeps it excruciatingly real.
“[Paul Robeson] was an artist who made us understand the depth of that calling when he said, ‘Artists are the gatekeepers of truth. We are civilization’s radical voice.’ Never in the history of Black America has there ever been such a harvest of truly gifted and powerful artists as we witness today. Yet, our nation hungers for their radical song. Let us not sit back silently. Let us not be charged with PATRIOTIC TREASON.”
The Roots featuring Big Krit, “Make My”
“Addicted to the green. If I don’t ball I get the shakes.
I’d give it all for a peace of mind for heaven’s sakes.
My heart so heavy that the ropes that hold my casket breaks,
‘Cause everything that wasn’t for me I had to chase.
I had to take. I had to take.”
Solange Knowles, “Bad Girls (Acoustic Version)”, Black Cab Sessions
“And still I try to throw you into my own hurricane
It’s like you spot me trying from a thousand miles away
I looked down on your soul, deep down I know that we’re the same
It’s stupid thinking that you would want to come play my game”
Imma be there in 5 minutes
